- Japanese logistics companies continue to invest; the BJFEZ Authority and the Consulate-General of Japan in Busan accelerate economic diplomacy

- Amid global supply chain restructuring, the BJFEZ emerges as a new hub for Korea–Japan economic cooperation

 

On the 21^st, the Busan–Jinhae Free Economic Zone Authority (Commissioner Park Sung-ho, hereafter referred to as “the BJFEZ Authority”) announced that Commissioner Park paid a courtesy visit to the Consulate-General of Japan in Busan, where he met with Consul-General Otsuka Tsuyoshi. The visit served as an opportunity to strengthen cooperation with Japanese companies in the Busan–Gyeongnam region and to build mutual trust between Korea and Japan.

 

The Consulate-General of Japan in Busan plays a central role in promoting diplomatic, economic, and cultural exchanges between Korea and Japan. Consul-General Otsuka, a former official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, has longstanding ties with Korea, having studied at Seoul National University. Since 2022, he has overseen diplomatic affairs for five cities and provinces, including Busan and Gyeongnam, in the southeastern region of Korea.

 

Commissioner Park Sung-ho, a former Counsellor for Intergovernmental Cooperation at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Japan, is recognized as an expert in Korea–Japan regional exchange. This visit was also considered a form of practical “economic diplomacy” amid the ongoing realignment of global supply chains.

 

Commissioner Park emphasized, “In times of global economic uncertainty, strategic regional partnerships are more important than ever. The BJFEZ offers an ideal location for Japanese companies to establish a logistics base in Asia.”

 

Currently, 72 Japanese companies are operating in the BJFEZ, with a cumulative investment totaling USD 360 million. Notably, major logistics firms such as Mitsui-Soko Korea, Naigai Busan, and Kokusai Express have recently expanded their investments, adding momentum to the development of the zone’s Global Coffee Logistics Hub and Tri-Port Project.

 

Commissioner Park stated, “Whether it is a company constructing a logistics warehouse or the government easing regulations, everything begins with open dialogue with the business community. I hope the Consulate-General will serve as a bridge between outstanding Japanese companies and our Free Economic Zone, and that we will continue to share information and opportunities.”

 

In response, Consul-General Otsuka remarked, “Japan and the Busan–Gyeongnam region have maintained a close geographical and economic relationship. I believe there remains significant potential for further cooperation, and the Consulate-General will continue to engage with relevant companies and institutions.”

 

Earlier this year, delegations from Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism as well as from Okayama Prefecture visited the BJFEZ Authority, further highlighting the region’s rising status as a strategic base for international logistics and investment. The BJFEZ Authority plans to further strengthen its role as a global supply chain hub through on-the-ground diplomacy and to contribute actively to national economic growth.
